Schools Send 'Your Kid Is Obese' Letters Home

Posted: Updated:

How would you feel if your child's school sent you a letter telling you that your child is obese? Well, a school district in Massachusetts did just that -- and some parents are fuming.

In an effort to tackle the problem schools in North Andover, Massachusetts started weighing and measuring students -- then sending a letter to parents with their child's body mass index along with notification on whether or not that BMI classifies their child as "overweight" or "obese."

Parents call the letters insulting and an invasion of privacy.

Child and adolescent psychologist Dr. David Swanson weighs in on the controversy on Studio 11 LA. He notes that it's no secret that childhood obesity has been rapidly increasing over the past few decades, and with that, an increase in diseases like diabetes.
