Entrepreneurs show food products at Flavor of Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -

There are some things you can only find in Georgia. But if a group of entrepreneurs win a unique contest that could change. From cheese, to honey, to jam, to blueberries, it's all at the University of Georgia's annual Flavor of Georgia contest.

"Flavor of Georgia is a chance for folks all across the state that are producing unique and individual food products to try to come together and get the attention of judges," said Kent Wolfe of the University of Georgia

Dick Byne is a blueberry farmer and two-time Flavor of Georgia winner. This year, he entered a product called the Georgia Bar, made up of all Georgia grown crops that he and his friends produce. He says he loves how the contest brings Georgia agriculture together.

"People walk by people every day and don't notice the resources that people have. And you start talking to people. Everybody will add to your development if you ask the questions," said Byne.

All the contestants are relatively small and unknown in the mass marketplace but want to get a broader customer base. First time contestants Joe and Brenda Edwards own King Louie seasonings. They say they came to win but they're not stopping here.

"I want to be able to get everywhere! Everywhere I can get our product and let people know about it. I have people now coming from Alaska and different places that come in on the internet and purchase it, but I want to get it in the stores," said Brenda Edwards.

Everybody's got a pitch, but in this contest, the whole state of Georgia wins.

Entries are judged on flavor, best use of Georgia ingredients, Georgia theme, unique or innovative qualities, commercial appeal and originality. The winners will be announced on Tuesday afternoon and you can sample the products from 11 a.m. to noon downtown at the Georgia Freight Depot at 65 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SE in Atlanta. For decades, Atlantans have woken up to Tom Sullivan on their radios.  But you might not know that he's also somewhat of an expert eBay seller, and he's got quite a story to tell.

They say the third time's a charm, and that's certainly the case for Candice Glover.  A third try on American Idol was just what she needed, and on Thursday night she was crowned the season 12 champ.
