SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Police say a teen was fatally shot during an undercover drug operation at The Village at Cornerstone in Southfield.  We're told it happened shortly before 4:00 p.m. Tuesday and involved an officer from the Oakland County Sheriff's Narcotics Enforcement Team.

According to a statement from the sheriff's office, a suspect tried to rob an undercover officer and put a weapon to his head.

"The officer pulled his gun and was able to fire shots that struck the suspect," the statement said.  "The officer was not injured."

One witness said he was leaving for work at the time and saw the whole thing go down.  It started off when he heard five or six gunshots.

"Initially I was scared because I was all of maybe like 15, 20 feet away," said Jeff Mapes.  "I took... cover, and then once I [saw] that it looked to be some form of operation, I was like okay."

Police said the suspect was pronounced dead after being conveyed to the hospital.  We're told he is a 17-year-old male from Southfield.  We do not know his identity at this time.

The fatal shooting is being investigated by the Oakland County Sheriff's Special Investigations Unit.
