Pope Francis

The pope, the Catholic Church, and other faiths

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Pope Francis's predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, reached out to all religious faiths.

In 2008, he made history becoming the first pope to visit a synagogue in the United States: the Park East Synagogue in Manhattan.

Rabbi Arthur Schneier says that Vatican II created a new respect between the two religions and he is hopeful Pope Francis will continue that growth. He says Cardinal Dolan will play a role as well.

There are 1.2 billion Catholics around the world and 1.5 billion Muslims. Imam Shamsi Al, the director of the Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens, says the pope must continue building bridges with Muslims.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn says there isn't any reason to believe that Pope Francis won't continue to build even stronger relationships with all religious faiths.
