Shots fired on freeway; officers follow suspect for several miles

BUCKEYE, Ariz. -

Shots were fired during a police pursuit that ended in the west valley Thursday.

Officers tracked down a sport utility vehicle that a carjacking stole from an elderly woman earlier this week in Scottsdale.

The pursuit began in Avondale and according to the Department of Public Safety, the suspect opened fire on Interstate 10 at the officer who was following him.

It all came to an end when officers sent in attack dogs.

Avondale police in an unmarked car first spotted the stolen Lexus and followed the suspect onto the freeway.  That's when a DPS officer turned on his lights and siren, but this suspect wasn't about to give up.

"He shot at least once at us..in an effort to scare us away," said Bart Graves of DPS.

DPS officers say this was not a high speed pursuit -- the suspect was still able to make it about 20 miles before stopping on a small bridge.

It's not clear what happened next, but it prompted officers to open fire. They also sent in their K-9s.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital.  He was the only one hurt.

"Frankly don't know if the suspect was hit by our gunshot or bitten..we know he was bitten by the dogs, but we're not really clear if our gunshot hit him," said Graves.

Police have been looking for the suspect since Tuesday.  Scottsdale police say he carjacked an elderly woman at gunpoint in a Safeway parking lot.

After seeing the huge response, people in the area knew police were not taking this lightly.

"We knew it was real serious when we saw at least 20..we counted..we were standing here in the driveway..and we stopped at 20..unloaded and went in the house and they still kept coming," said Helen Kovac, an area resident.

Scottsdale police say the Lexus at the scene of the shooting is indeed the vehicle from the Safeway parking lot, but they're still trying to determine if the man taken to the hospital is the same suspect who carjacked the elderly victim.
