DeKalb County School Board set to meet

Posted: Updated:

The DeKalb County School Board meets officially for the first time on Wednesday night after six new members were sworn in. With the district's accreditation on the line, and the confidence of the county, the board will have a lot to discuss.
Governor Nathan Deal appointed six new members to the board last week, replacing the members he removed last month. The removals came after an accrediting agency put the district on probation.
Interim superintendent Michael Thurmond says the board's first order of business will be to restore full accreditation.

"I'm excited and looking forward to working with the new members of the board as well as the existing members to focus our attention now on improving academic performance for all of our students. The men and women are well qualified and I think they'll provide excellent service to the district," said Thurmond.

But not everyone is as enthusiastic about the new board as Thurmond. The Georgia NAACP and other community leaders held a town hall meeting at Thankful Baptist Church in Decatur on Tuesday night. Many of the people there said Governor Deal's replacement of six school board members was unconstitutional.

The outgoing members of the school board challenged Governor Deal's decision to remove them in court but lost.
