3,500 unclaimed jewelry, collectible items up for auction

PHOENIX -

Bid on over 3,500 items seized by the Arizona Department of Revenue on Saturday.

The department has seized items like gold, silver, rare coins, 1960's baseball cards, diamonds, precious stones, vintage jewelry, collectibles and sterling silver flatware.

When these items go unclaimed, the department holds an auction where you can get quality items for a big bargain.

When you walk into Sierra Auction's display room, it feels like walking into a museum or treasure chest. All the items were found inside unclaimed bank lock boxes, and now they're up for auction.

"Somebody passed away. They didn't know the family member had a safety deposit box. The bank hangs onto it for three years. The Department of Revenue hangs onto it for an additional three years before it gets auctioned," explains Mark Feuerer, president of Sierra Auction.

Some items are historic or cultural, some have sentimental value, and others are just weird, like a set of gold-capped teeth.

"They're gold-capped so it must have had some sort of collector value. At least its worth the gold that's in the teeth, but its a very odd thing that we found," says Feuerer.

Attend a public preview on Friday; the auction is at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Online bidding is already open for many of the items.

The company expects to bring in around half a million dollars in the sale.
