Parents meet to discuss Southgate student suicide

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHGATE, Mich. (WJBK) -

Concerned parents gathered at Davidson Middle School Sunday night, as students prepared to return to school, following the death of a classmate.

13 year-old Tyler Nichols tragically took his own life with a gun Thursday morning, while inside the school.

The school held a meeting exclusively for parents Sunday night, informing what school would be like Monday when students return to class.

"We have four days of school this week, and then we go into spring break," said Southgate Schools Superintendent William Grusecki. "We just need to get through this (week), and then that week off will help everyone heal a little bit, too."

Many students spend their Sunday at the Molnar Funeral Home in Southgate for Tyler's visitation.

At one point, nearly 50 friends waited outside for a chance to pay their respects to Tyler and his family.

Monday will be the first day back to school for the students, after Nichols shot himself in a school bathroom last Thursday.

We're told grief counselors will be on hand to provide emotional support for both students and faculty. The district also has substitutes in place if any teacher feels too emotionally overwhelmed to work.

Students will also be greeted with more security Monday morning. Administrators told Fox 2 they intend on making school feel as normal as possible, but in the meantime certain security precautions will be necessary.

Student backpacks will be checked when they arrive on school property.

"We just want to assure our parents that their kids are going to be fine," Grusecki said. "We encourage them to talk to their kids, talk to them all the time. If they see their kid's mood changing or if their spirit's down, they need to talk to them."
