Miami Marlins sell home opener seats on Groupon

The Miami Marlins are offering seats on deal site Groupon for more than half-off regular price for their home opener on April 8th.

In an effort to fill the stands the team is selling $42 seat packages for $20.  They come with a $10 merchandise voucher and a voucher for a seat worth up to $75 at any other Marlins home game during April or May. 

The Marlins will play the Atlanta Braves in a 7:10 p.m. game against the Atlanta Braves to open the second season of Marlins Park.  The publicly-financed stadium seats 37,000.

In 2012, the team opened the new stadium with a new team name, going from the Florida Marlins to the Miami Marlins, and a roster filled with big names and big contracts.  It didn't pan out well.  The team under performed and fans stayed away in droves.  In fact, the team only sold out games two times last year.

The team ended up drawing the fewest fans at a first-year ballpark in three decades.  Now, in 2013, the team has slashed its payroll and is in a rebuilding mode.

This is not the first time the Marlins or MLB have used Groupon, but it is the first time a team has relied on it to try to fill the stands for opening day, which is traditionally a hard ticket to buy in most major league cities.

The Marlins issued a statement saying, "It is our priority to ensure that the excitement and energy of Major League Baseball and of the award-winning Marlins Park, remain cost-effective and accessible to all families throughout the South Florida community. The Marlins, along with many sports teams throughout the country, have used and will continue to use Groupon along with other social marketing sites to help accomplish that goal. In addition, as usual, fans may also benefit from special promotions and deals available at http://www.marlins.com."
