Boy locked in apartment with dead mother

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A New Jersey boy was found Tuesday morning locked inside an apartment with his dead mother's body.

It happened on Manor Drive in Union. The boy had apparently been alone for nearly a week and had not eaten.

Neighbors reported a foul smell and alerted police. Building managers reportedly found the boy behind a chained door.

He was rushed to a local hospital. His condition was unclear.

One neighbor told reporters that he hadn't seen the woman since January and didn't hear any commotion coming from the apartment.

The woman, who has not been identified, is believed to have died of natural causes several days prior and the boy could not get out of the house.

A Point Pleasant resident frustrated with what he sees as slow action on the part of the Borough Council on making the town safer for pedestrians and bicyclists has started a petition urging the council to act. The petition, posted on change.org, said that while the council passed a Complete Streets ordinance last year and commissioned a report, little of substance has been done, Hagemeyer says. The council meets tonight at 7 at the municipal building.

Workers continue making repairs after a New Jersey Transit train derailed on the Montclair-Boonton line. NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder says passengers on that line are facing delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions on Wednesday because the railroad can only use one track. The train derailed between the Bay Street and Walnut Street stations in Montclair on Tuesday afternoon. No one was injury and passengers were safely transferred from the train.
