NEW YORK (AP) - The rides are officially open at Coney Island, New York City's most famous beach destination.

But despite the traditional Palm Sunday opening, many seasonal businesses at the beach getaway are still reeling from the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Now they're hoping for good weather and large crowds to make up for money spent on Sandy repairs.

D.J. Vourderis got the iconic Deno's Famous Wonder Wheel open in time, but his family's business is about $500,000 in debt after borrowing to redo all the electrical wiring on the Ferris wheel. They also replaced 24 new bumper cars and redesigned the entire Spook-A-Rama ride, which was waterlogged.

Eldorado Auto Skooter owner Gordon Lee says the arcade is open but has 40% fewer games.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
