A man is in custody after police say he was involved in a domestic violence incident and a hit and run crash.

Mesa police were dispatched to a home near Sossaman and Broadway Roads early Saturday morning about a family fight.

While heading to the scene, officers were told that a male had left the residence in a white Chevrolet Suburban sport utility vehicle and he was armed with a handgun.

They received another call shortly before arriving at the home about a hit and run crash involving the SUV into a wall, with the subject fleeing the area on foot.

Officers later determined that the crash involved the same vehicle the suspect fled the family fight in.

While they searched for the man, dispatch notified the officers that the person they were looking for, 25-year-old Kenneth Mercer, was calling 911 from a gas station near Power Road and Southern Avenue -- wanting to turn himself in.

When officers arrived at the gas station, Mercer was taken into custody without incident.

Mercer stated that he threw the handgun into a backyard while running from the scene, admitted to the domestic violence assault and the hit and run crash, according to Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato.

The handgun was found in the area where Mercer fled from the SUV and no officers were injured in this case.

Mercer was arrested for the hit and run crash, assault and DUI.
