Two people are dead and two injured following a two-vehicle collision on southbound 101 just before Glendale Ave.
Authorities say a pickup truck occupied by a 53-year-old male driver and a 15-year-old passenger struck a white SUV about 6 p.m.
"Struck at a high rate of speed... both vehicles flip several times, off the freeway, off the shoulder, and end up here in the desert," said DPS spokesman Bart Graves.
They were both ejected -- the driver was killed and the passenger suffered a broken leg.
The driver of the white SUV, a 32-year-old woman, also died. Her female passenger was transported with non life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses say the pickup driver was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed, and made a sudden lane change from the HOV lane to the far right lane. It's not clear why he crossed all lanes of traffic. DPS says the pickup was a work truck, and was carrying painting materials.
"This poor victim, she was just trying to get on the freeway when she was struck... it's just a horrible, tragic circumstance," said Graves.
99th Ave was closed between Glendale Ave and Northern Ave.
DPS is investigating.
