Taking A Hike? Some Safety Tips For Your Trek

Los Angeles, CA -
With the search underway for missing hikers in Orange County its important to remember even an easy hike can turn dangerous or deadly if you're unprepared with no means of communication.

According to California's Parks department, a few small supplies and safety tips can keep you alive and easier to find if you get lost, injured or go missing while hiking.

  • Hike with a friend
  • Let someone who is not hiking with you know where you're going and what time you plan to return
  • Don't walk off trail
  • Be aware of wildlife even close to urban areas

  • Plenty of water
  • A whistle- 3 toots on a whistle is the international sign of distress
  • A reflecting mirror- it can be used as a signal to let others know where you are if you can't communicate otherwise
  • A small first aid kit for scrapes cuts or poisonous bites or plants.
  • Sunscreen and bug repellent
  • Dress in layers incase you end up spending the night and the temperature drops.

All these supplies are inexpensive and can fit in a small backpack (or fanny pack for those brave enough to sport them)
