Civic group offers reward in Buckhead robberies

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A civic group is doing its part to fight crime by offering a reward for a string of robberies in north Atlanta.

Last month, police performed targeted traffic enforcement in the north Atlanta community, only to have a kidnapping and robbery happen less than an hour after the detail ended.

Former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell, the founding president of The Buckhead Coalition,  says the civic group has decided to do something about it.

"We're going to offer a reward of $5,000 each. Frankly, a good tipster will earn a lot more money than the perpetrators," Massell said.

There are four open armed robbery cases in Buckhead. Zone 2 Commander Major Van Hobbs says police have put all their resources into solving these crimes and believe they've captured a kidnapping and robbery suspect.

"He had the victim's vehicle in South Carolina… was placed under arrest in that state. We're sending an investigator to interview him," Hobbs said.

Massell says the Buckhead coalition has a history of working with police to keep the community safe. They've even paid officers to move there.

"We've moved in 12 officers into Buckhead with that bonus program,' Massell said.

The folks who live and work in this affluent community are just happy that business and civic leaders have put their money where their mouths are.

"I am just so excited the community is stepping up, because that's the only way that it's gonna stop. Instead of just saying it's none of my business, they have now made it their business," said Chyna McGarity, who works in Buckhead.

Atlanta police are showing sketches, photos and video of the kidnapping and robbery suspects to their victims. They'll release them to the public later this week.
