Man beaten with wooden table leg

A Long Island man is accused of breaking into a home and attacking the resident with a wooden table leg.

Nassau County police say it happened Thursday morning just after 8 a.m.

Officers say Albert Garfield, 47, crashed through the fence in the driveway of the victim's Bethpage house, kicked in the front door and started beating the 50-year-old victim.

The victim had multiple contusions and abrasions and was taken to the hospital for head injuries.

Police say Garfield took off before they arrived to the scene but at 10 a.m. they say he turned up at a Kia car dealership.

They say he came across a 50-year-old woman who was at the dealership waiting to get her car serviced.  Police say he stole the car but ended up in an accident on Hicksville Road and the ramp for the Southern State Parkway in North Massapequa.

Garfield He was arrested and transported to Nassau University Medical Center.  Police say he had been high on drugs at the time.

Garfield was charged with assault, grand larceny, criminal possession of a weapon and driving while ability impaired by drugs.

The motive for the crimes and whether Garfield had a lawyer were not immediately known.

He was scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, April 05, 2013 in Hempstead.
