PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities say a man who was free on bond from New Mexico has been arrested in an Arizona smuggling case.
Maricopa County sheriff's spokesman Chris Hegstrom says 26-year-old Adam Ortiz was arrested by detectives with the human smuggling unit Thursday night. He was accused of transporting five people from Mexico.
Detectives say the Mexican nationals paid up to $4,000 to be smuggled across the border near Agua Prieta and were believed to be heading to Texas, Kansas, Illinois and New Jersey.
Hegstrom says Ortiz has been booked on state charges that include smuggling and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. In New Mexico, he's facing aggravated armed robbery and tampering with evidence charges.
The five passengers in Ortiz's vehicle have been booked as co-conspirators for human smuggling. Authorities believe they are in the U.S. illegally.
