Man faces numerous charges after boarding school bus with a gun

Posted: Updated:

New video has been released involving a story we broke Thursday on FOX 10 News at 5 p.m. involving a man boarding a school bus with young children and he was reportedly carrying a gun.

29-year-old Jeremy West is now behind bars, facing numerous charges. He told police he hears voices and got on the bus because he feared for his life, afraid someone was trying to kill him.

The bus aide apparently thought West was a parent and let him board.

After we aired his picture, viewers recognized West and called the police. By 9:30 p.m., he'd been caught.

Surveillance video shows West armed and getting on the school bus with children.

West told the bus aide he was with one of the kids as he sat on the bus Thursday morning.

"I'm just glad that they got him," said Sherrie Hawk, a concerned parent.

Kids told the police they could see the gun in West's pocket.  When they arrived at Simpson Elementary, West got off the bus and left a 9mm fully loaded magazine on the seat.

In the video, you could see West ask an aide where the nearest church was before leaving.

Police say they don't know why West had a gun and why he would get on the bus in the first place.

"Who knows, who knows to leave a clip on a bus, it could be anything," said Joseph Hawk, a concerned parent.

Police tracked West down by releasing photos of him and that's when the tips started coming in.

All of those tips led police to an apartment complex.  Undercover officers waited there for West to show up and when he did, they arrested him.

West had been staying with his sister in her apartment.  The same complex where he boarded the bus near 27th Ave. and Camelback.

"We saw everything.  We were sitting right outside when it happened," said Sherrie Hawk.

Police say they also found the gun inside the apartment.

"They got him in and out of here with a quickness," said Joseph.

According to court records, West has been arrested before for marijuana possession and disorderly conduct.  He's now facing possible endangerment, trespassing and bringing a weapon on school property charges. He's being held on $45,000 bond.

Alhambra School District has now changed their policy for allowing parents on the bus.  For 20 years, they've let parents and staff ride the bus with kids.  Now only staff and volunteers who have a badge will be allowed to ride the bus.
