Ariz. game officials investigate elk poaching case

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Investigators with the state Game and Fish Department are trying to find out who was behind the illegal killing of an elk in northern Arizona.

Authorities say the poaching incident took place during the weekend of March 16 along Lake Mary Road about 12 miles southeast of Flagstaff. The animal was shot twice and left to rot.

Investigators believe the suspect or suspects may have been scared off by another vehicle, were spotlighting or just randomly shot the elk from the road.

Wildlife Manager Lee Luedeker says the weather was nice that weekend and many people were out so the department is hoping someone has information that could help solve the case.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the department's Operation Game Thief Hotline.
