Gang targets Englewood family

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Phyllis Robinson is angry and frustrated after she and her husband Sean were beaten by gang members in their front yard on Thursday. Sean was released from Mount Sinai Hospital Saturday afternoon, commenting, "They beat me with sticks. One guy tried to hit me with a brick. They fractured my skull and I had to have staples put in my head." Sean's injuries were significant, as the staples in his head are clearly visible.

It was just last week the Robinson's moved into this home in the 2000 block of West 68th Place. The couple claims they were attacked because they padlocked their gangway gate to keep gang bangers from dealing drugs there. "People are coming by shooting at [these gangbangers] and we don't want the bullets flying into our path," Sean said.

However, it's not just bullets that have this family worried. Early this morning, Phyllis' sister's home right across the street was set on fire. Fortunately, nobody was home at the time, and police bomb & arson are now investigating it as suspicious. Still, the intimidation even went beyond that. "They bust my mother in law's windows out, her and my car windows out, threatened me, & said they wanted me dead," Phyllis said.

The Robinson's have called police and reached out to several ministers. "First I was astounded by the blatant sense of violence towards them; only being in the community for one week and the reception they have received. It was very disheartening to me as a community leader," responded Bishop James Dukes of the Liberation Christian Center.

Phyllis says while she's moving back to Cal City, the gangs won't have the last say with her. "I'm in it for the long haul. I'm standing up, I'm not sitting down," she firmly stated.
