SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Police say a Shelby Township man was assaulted at his house on Shelby Creek Drive.  The home was also robbed.

The homeowner runs a successful scrap yard in Mount Clemens.  He was restrained with zip ties and duct tape.  He eventually got free, but not before three masked men escaped.

Police will not say what items were taken.

"Between one and two o'clock last night, three individuals wearing ski masks confronted him [at his home], assaulted him and severely beat him, tied him up, duct taped him and eventually gained entry to his residence and took some valuables out of the residence," said Shelby Township Police Chief Roland Woelkers.

The victim was hospitalized.  He was badly injured, but in stable condition.

The chief advises neighbors and any other residents not to panic.  He said it appears the three men knew their victim.  It was not a random crime.

"We want to assure the residents that this is a specific crime to him and his residence.  The preliminary investigation indicates that,"  Woelkers said.  "So there's no safety concerns for the community."

If you have any information, call Shelby Township Police.
