10 kitchen gadgets to make your life healthier

Cooking healthy, fresh food is a lot easier if you have the right tools. But how do you know what to buy? The American Heart Association says there are 10 gadgets that are easy to find, and they are not expensive.

Best of all, the AHA says they can cut thousands of calories out of the food you're eating. At Cook's Warehouse in Midtown Atlanta, chef and owner Mary Moore volunteered to show the 10 utensils.

First, she says, grab a set of measuring spoons, to help you avoid over salting food.

"I have some friends who say a little bit is good, a whole lot is better!  But that's just not always true," Moore said.

A food scale can measure portion sizes for you, and to add tons of flavor without fat, grab a garlic press, and throw in a juicer.

Moore's favorite is gadget is the zester.

"It really provides a lot of flavor in dishes, lemon or lime zest or orange zest without adding really hardly any calories at all," Moore said.

A salad spinner takes a lot of the prep work out of making a fresh salad, and a food chopper makes using fresh herbs easier. Moore also recommends a mortar and pestle for crushing spices. You probably already have an apple corer, but you may not have a melon baller.

They're 10 utensils that make cooking fresh so much easier.

"If we can make things more attractive, and more fun to eat, then we're likely to eat better," said Moore.
