39 LA Schools Among Most Distinguished In California

(CNS) Thirty-nine schools in Los Angeles County and 26 in Orange County were among 218 named as California distinguished schools today.

"These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college," Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction, said. "Given the enormous challenges schools have faced in recent years, it is inspiring to see this kind of success in so many schools."

Selection is based on grades and closing performance gaps among demographic groups.

   Los Angeles County school making the list were:
   -- Artesia High;
   -- Martin B. Tetzlaff Middle;
   -- Foothills Middle;
   -- Richard Henry Dana Middle;
   -- El Roble Intermediate;
   -- Warren High;
   -- Granada Middle;
   -- Glen A. Wilson High;
   -- Newton Middle;
   -- Wilder's Preparatory Academy Charter;
   -- Alice C. Stelle Middle;
   -- Arthur E. Wright Middle;
   -- Calabasas High;
   -- California Academy of Mathematics and Science;
   -- International Polytechnic High;
   -- Alliance Dr. Olga Mohan High;
   -- Community Charter Early College High;
   -- Community Charter Middle;
   -- KIPP Academy of Opportunity;
   -- Lakeview Charter High;
   -- Renaissance Arts Academy;
   -- Rancho-Starbuck Intermediate;
   -- Clifton Middle;
   -- Arlie F. Hutchinson Middle;
   -- Palos Verdes High;
   -- Huntington Middle;
   -- San Marino High;
   -- New West Charter;
   -- South Pasadena Senior High;

In Orange County, the honorees were:

   -- Edison High;
   -- Northwood High;
   -- Laguna Beach High;
   -- Thurston Middle;
   -- Mesa View Middle;
   -- Cerro Villa Middle;
   -- El Rancho Charter;
   -- Villa Park High;
   -- El Dorado High;
   -- Yorba Linda High;
   -- Yorba Linda Middle;
   -- El Toro High;
   -- Los Alisos Intermediate;

   -- Orange County School of the Arts;

The state recognizes elementary schools in alternate years.
