Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say they caught five people Wednesday who were illegally smuggled into the U.S.

Deputies say a Kia van came to a stop on the side of the road in Northern Maricopa County and eight to 10 men and one woman ran off into the desert. Deputies were unable to find the suspects.

Detectives with the Human Smuggling Unit were able to detain five more suspects who were still in the van.

The suspects told detectives they had paid up to $7,000 to be illegally smuggled in the U.S. They were supposed to end up in New York, New Jersey and Florida.

According to deputies, one suspect was a Mexican national and two others said they were Guatemalan nationals.

A 15-year-old boy from Guatemala was found among the five suspects. He was turned over to border patrol.

The remaining four suspects, 27-year-old Jesus Aguilar-Olan, 23-year-old Enrique Larios-Lopez, 18-year-old Esdras Chonay-Calico and 27-year-old Jose Lozano-Jimenez were arrested and booked into jail on felony state charges related to Human Smuggling.

Deputies say Lozano-Jimenez punched a detective in the mouth while they were trying to arrest him. He faces additional charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

In the past five weeks, HSU detectives have booked 29 suspects into jail for human smuggling.
