PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's top Democratic gubernatorial candidate says he would grant driver's licenses to young immigrants awarded work permits under a new Obama administration program.

Fred DuVal told the Associated Press Thursday that he would be friendlier to Arizona's immigrant community compared with Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.

Brewer signed into law Arizona's strict anti-immigrant law in 2010. She has said young people in the Obama administration program are still in the country illegally and should not receive public benefits, including driver's licenses.

DuVal's campaign also announced Thursday endorsements from former Democratic governors Raul Castro, Rose Mofford and Bruce Babbitt.

The announcement helps cement DuVal's status as the early Democratic front-runner in the 2014 gubernatorial race.

Former Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman is also running for governor as a Republican.
