MANCHESTER, NH (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A New Hampshire man is accused of swallowing a $3,200 engagement ring after trying to steal it from a Manchester jewelry store.
Manchester police responded to the Bellman's Jewelers on Elm Street just after 6:30 p.m. Thursday where employees were holding a man accused of stealing a ring.
Investigators say 52-year-old Ronald Perley entered the store and told an employee he was looking for an engagement ring. The employee took out a tray of rings for Perley to see, at which time employees say the 52-year-old took one ring and ran toward the door.
Store employees executed security measures that resulted in the door being locked, leaving Perley stuck inside the store. The employees say Perley swallowed the ring after they demanded he turn it over to them. He denied any wrongdoing and waited for police to arrive.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, which they say confirmed what the employees described. They searched Perley with his consent, but did not find the missing diamond ring.
Acting on a search warrant, investigators took Perley to Elliot Hospital where x-rays showed the ring was inside of his body.
Perley is charged with felony theft and falsifying physical evidence.
