Ask Tony and Tucker: Sun Dog

Posted: Updated:

Our Ask Tony and Tucker question comes from Janelle Beenken in Alexandria.

Janelle says on Saturday, the Washington Post published a photo of a phenomenon known as a "Sun Dog" that appeared over Havana, Cuba.

The photo caption states that the halo around the sun is caused by the refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals in the atmosphere.

Where do the ice crystals come from and why is this "Sun Dog" only seen over cuBa and not over nearby Florida or elsewhere in the U.S.?

Also, why does the phenomenon have the word "Dog" in its name?
