Video shows beating of Queens girls

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A beat down by bullies in Astoria, Queens, that was caught on video left two middle school girls terrified to be on the street in their own neighborhood. Now the girls and their parents are turning to police at the precinct to restore their sense of safety.

The video, given to Fox 5 by a parent, shows the brutal fight near Astoria Park on Friday. A couple dozen high school students targeted two middle school girls. They punched and kicked them mercilessly, even pulling the strawberry blonde hair of Cristina Campos, 14. She suffered a bad cut over her eye that required eight stitches, black eyes, bruises, and a bite on her arm.

"When she kicked me in my eye, i didn't notice i was bleeding until after it was all over," campus said.

Her friend and classmate, Samatha Gonzalez, tried to help her but they were no match for the large group of attackers. Gonzalez ended up with two black eyes, a fractured nose, and bruises all over her body.

Her mother can't look at the video of her daughter's beating without breaking down in tears. She can't understand how older students, especially girls, could do this.

"They could have killed my daughter," Nina Kunicki said.

City Council Member Peter Vallone notified police and school officials when he learned of the video.

The parents of the girls are working with detectives to identify everyone involved to bring them to justice.

New York City subway riders are getting back service on the G train between Brooklyn and Queens. The return of service comes as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reopens a tunnel Tuesday that was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The Greenpoint tunnel has been closed for five weeks for repairs. Shuttle buses were provided between G stops in Queens and Brooklyn during that time.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
