Hospital blood drive honors Boston bombing victims

ATLANTA -

Atlanta Medical Center held blood drive honoring the Boston Marathon victims to support communities in the metro area on Friday.

Donors know the blood they give will not go directly to the victims of Monday's blast, but that hasn't stopped them from showing their support

Officials at the medical center say there is a surplus blood supply in the Boston area. They say the blood drive is also being used to raise awareness for the need to keep metro Atlanta's blood supply fully in stock.

One man who donated blood is a registered nurse and a native of Boston. Jack Attaya says he felt a need to come out and show his support for his hometown.

"There's a lot of people that have the idea that if you mess with Boston, you are going to get caught and pay for it. People in Boston, you known, we don't let things like that fly. They look out for each other," said Attaya.

Donors received a free lunch tote bag. The event was held in conjunction with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers.
