El Sereno Car Shooting Leaves One Man Dead

Posted: Updated:
El Sereno, CA -

(FOX 11) "It could have been much worse."

Yes, it's a cliche but that's what a detective with the LAPD said this morning -- and he's right.

Someone opened fire at 7:10 am on a man driving a Chevy pickup truck on busy Huntington Drive in El Sereno.

Police think that while he was being shot at, 47-year-old Charlie Alvarez made a last breath attempt to get away from his shooter, but lost control of his truck and crashed head on into a light pole about a half a block away.

He died moments later.

From across the street I counted nine bullet holes in his truck. There are probably more.

Charlie is dead and that is bad enough but, as the officer said, it could have been much worse. An innocent child walking to school, someone driving by, you get the picture.

Now the LAPD has a whodunit on their hands.

And while police don't think this was a random shooting, they think Charlie was the intended victim of all those bullets, until they catch the shooter, somewhere in this big city there's someone armed with a gun who apparently didn't think twice about shooting it in broad daylight on a busy street.

Yes, it could have been much worse.

If you have any information on this morning's shooting at Huntington Drive and Collis, please call LAPD Homicide Detectives at 323-342-8956. Callers can remain anonymous.
