Man killed in officer-involved shooting identified

Posted: Updated:

A man who committed aggravated assault on a police officer and was shot by another officer last week has been identified.

The deceased suspect is 22-year-old Zachariah Pithan. He doesn't have a criminal record.

Saturday night, an officer fatally shot Pithan, who during a fight with police was preparing to strike the officer's partner with a wood table leg, at a residence in the 1700 block of West Glendale Ave.

Investigators say the man who was killed had been acting erratically, had destroyed mailboxes at the apartment complex where the shooting occurred and threatened to hurt neighbors.

Officers say they tried to get Pithan to leave the apartment he was in, but he refused and started a fight by pulling an officer into the apartment.

Police say they subdued the man, but he broke away, grabbed the table leg and raised it in an attempt to hit an officer.

Another officer then drew his gun and shot Pithan, who later died.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
