Macon police chief retiring after 38 years

MACON, Ga. (AP) - After 38 years and five months with the department, Macon's Chief of Police has announced his retirement.

Macon Police Sgt. Melanie Hoffmann says Chie Mike Burns announced his retirement Friday. Burns has served in the position for just under eight years.

Hoffmann says Deputy Police Chief Mike Carswell will serve as interim chief until Dec. 31, 2013. After that, the police department and the Bibb County Sheriff's office will be consolidated.
