Ga. county given grant to curb domestic violence

Posted: Updated:

CONYERS, Ga. (AP) - Rockdale County has been awarded a grant of over $100,600 to reduce homicides caused by domestic violence.

County spokeswoman Tonya Parker says the grant is part of a $2.3 million effort by the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women. The county was 1 of 12 selected in the country as a demonstration site, and officials will partner with the National Institute of Justice to evaluate the outcome of the effort.

Officials say the county will be eligible for additional funding if the project produces effective strategies aimed at curbing domestic violence homicides.

State Court Judge Nancy Bills says the project is focused on law enforcement, courts, prosecutors, health care providers, family programs and others who interact with domestic violence victims.
