Police: Wrong-way driver triggers 5 crashes

Posted: Updated:

Authorities with the Georgia State Patrol say one person was injured after a wrong-way driver triggered five  crashes, including one involving a GSP vehicle on Monday.

Investigators say the GSP vehicle was watching traffic between Interstate 20 and the ramp lanes that merge from I-75/85 when a black Dodge Ram truck slammed into the rear of the trooper's vehicle. They say the truck tried to back up and in doing so, struck a Toyota Camry.

They say after hitting the Camry, the truck turned around and headed west in the eastbound lanes of I-20. The driver then struck a Nissan Altima, and started traveling west on the eastbound ramp at Lee Street where the driver hit a Honda Prelude head-on. The driver of the Prelude was transported to Grady Hospital.

Police say after striking the Prelude, the driver of the truck then hit a Freightliner truck. After hitting the Freightliner, police say the suspect left the Dodge Ram and fled on foot.

Investigators say there was also a two-car wreck involving a Kia and a Mitsubishi resulting from the wrong way driver, but neither one of these vehicles made contact with the Dodge Ram.
