Blow dry-only salons

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Drybar on West Broadway in Tribeca was packed Wednesday morning. The blow driers were buzzing. Drybar specializes in blow dries -- no cuts, no color; just blow dries. For $40 women get coiffed as they sip coffee or mimosas and watch chick flicks on flat-screen TVs.

Owner Alli Webb opened the first Drybar three years ago in California. There are now 27 of them across the U.S., including five in New York City.

"It's a healthy addiction. You come in, you get a taste of it, get your hair blown out and float out of here and feel amazing," she said. "You're going to want to come back and do it again."

The newest blow dry-only salon is Dreamdry in Flatiron It opens at 6:30 a.m. and stays open through 10 p.m. to accommodate busy schedules. Robin Moraetes co-founded the place along with celebrity stylist and fashion designer Rachel Zoe.

Dreamdry has an iPad located at every blow dry station, where women can pick out their hairstyles for the day and read current issues of their favorite magazines.

There is also Fix Beauty Bar on the Upper East Side where women can get a blow dry and manicure at the same time.

"The thing that all New York women have in common -- we always say none of us have any time," said Karol Markowicz of Fix Beauty Bar. "No matter what our stage of life we are all time crunched. And we're here for that."

The blow dry salon industry shows no signs of slowing down. Dreamdry will open another location on 57th Street this summer. Drybar has plans for over a dozen new locations nationwide.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
