Brewer approves Arizona license plate for teachers

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill approving a license plate that would raise money for public school teachers.

Brewer acted on the license plate bill late Monday without commenting. The measure would award prizes to "extraordinary educators."

The plates would cost $25, with most of the money honoring teachers who oversee activities or lessons for students in kindergarten and grades one through 8. County school superintendents would help oversee the distribution of the money.

House Bill 2217 says supporters must raise $32,000 to pay for the plate by December 2016. The state says the new plate will pay for itself.

In all, there would be 54 special license plates representing various causes and organizations.

Both parties in the Republican-led Legislature had endorsed the measure.
