CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Police Honor Guard is on duty at the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park. Tuesday recognizes the ultimate sacrifice hundreds of officers have made for the city.

They will be on guard for 24 hours to remember the more than 150 men and women whose names are inscribed on the black granite memorial wall, to mark Police Month.

Families stopped by overnight, when the 24-hour post began, and will continue to visit over the course of the day. A ceremonial wreath was displayed at midnight, as buglers played Taps. Another will be placed on the wall by First Deputy Superintendent Alfonza Wysinger at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Appreciation activities are scheduled all week, including a 5K run and the St. Jude parade, where thousands of cops will come to the park and march in their units. It's sure to be a moving, emotional demonstration.

The beautiful, peaceful memorial is located near Soldier Field, near 18th Street and Waldron Dr. The honor guard assures loved ones their loss is never forgotten.
