DETROIT (WJBK) -

Two passengers in an SUV say a man driving was shot in the head during an attempted robbery overnight on the city's east side.

The female passengers tell police they were waiting for a train to cross in the area of 7 Mile Road and Mound early Wednesday morning when a man approached the driver's side of their Dodge Durango and opened fire.

The victim, a 25-year-old from Sterling Heights, was able to flee the scene and drive to a nearby urgent care center where he died from his wounds, FOX 2's Roop Raj reports.

Raj says the Cooper Creek Urgent Care on Outer Dr. was not open when they arrived.

The passengers tell police they were on their way home from a Detroit casino. Police say their investigation into the women's story is ongoing.

So far, there have been no arrests.
