PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed a bill eliminating jail time for people convicted of improperly using legal fireworks primarily because it didn't take into account different regional circumstances and local safety and fire concerns.

House Bill 2481 vetoed Tuesday would have cut the penalty from a misdemeanor that can net 30 days in jail and a $500 fine to a petty offense. The maximum petty offense penalty is a $300 fine.

The fireworks involved were illegal until 2010 when Brewer signed a bill long sought by the fireworks industry. It legalized sparklers and fireworks that shoot off sparks but don't explode or fly into the air.

Arizona governors vetoed several versions of that bill in the 1990s. Brewer cited the threat of wildfires in vetoing a 2009 version.
