Officer helps deliver baby on side of road

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A Fulton County police officer went beyond the call of duty when he helped deliver a baby on the side of the road on Wednesday.

Officer David Williamson was working a side job as a traffic officer on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. He said that around 8:45 a.m., a car pulled over and a woman said they needed help.

Williamson says he called 911, but before paramedics arrived, he and the baby's father helped the mom deliver the boy in the front passenger seat.

"Dad was helping me because the shoulders get stuck in the birth canal, dad was kind of helping that along and then afterwards I pretty much caught the baby," said Williamson.

The veteran police officer says he turned the newborn face down to help him take his first breath in life.

"As I was holding the baby, dad was smacking him on the bum, trying to get him to cry so he'd start to breathe because he wasn't breathing obviously at first," said Williamson.

The ambulance drove the mother and child to Northside Hospital. Dad followed in his car.

Officer Williamson, who has served 19 years as a police officer, says he's made dozens of 911 calls in the past, but usually under different circumstances.

"A lot of times I have to deal with a lot of violence just because, you know, when you call 911, usually it's not a good situation, you know, a domestic or something like that. Whenever you have a chance to bring something like a life in to the world, it's pretty special," said Williamson.

Williamson says it happened so fast that he never even got the family's name.

The mother and baby were reportedly doing fine.
