First The 405, Now The 5 Freeway 'Goes Wide'

Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) The 5 freeway between the 605 and the orange county line is 57 years old and handles about 230,000 cars every day. But, now it's getting a billion and a half dollar facelift.

Four new lanes! Two on each side of a 7 mile stretch. Bridge overhauls. It's such a big project it's been broken down into six smaller ones. I got a tweet from Liz out there saying "I live next to this headache. It's not a pretty site."

The next big step is May 22nd with the ground breaking of the next big portion of the expansion in the Norwalk area.

CalTrans officials know this kind of project is tough for people who live in areas like this … they say a lot of people area actually happy the expansion is happening. Maybe so, but there are drivers out there who are not happy at all. I got online was from John who says he gets to work okay sometimes, but driving home can be a nightmare.

Four of the 6 projects are underway. The next part will begin this month with a ground breaking in the Norwalk area on May 22nd.

When all of this is done in 2016 to 2017 what will it look like? You know that feeling you get when you leave LA County  on the 5 and cross the orange county line? You notice how much larger the freeway is there as you head toward the Disneyland area? Caltrans officials say it'll look like that and maybe, finally, after 57 years the I-5 will feel like the happiest place on earth!
