5-year-old boy shoots, kills 2-year-old sister in Kentucky

ATLANTA -

A tragic accident has taken the life of a 2-year-old girl in Kentucky. She was shot and killed by her 5-year-old brother with a gun he received as a gift.

"Guns are passed down generations through generations. You know, you learn to start shooting a gun here at a very young age. You know, learning how to hunt," said Cumberland County Coroner Gary White.

The children's mother had reportedly stepped outside just minutes before the incident. The rifle was kept in a corner, and reportedly the family didn't realize a shell was left inside of it. The shooting has been ruled accidental.

"I hope the outcome of this, you know, what we can learn from this tragic situation is, you know, is gun safety. You know, let's make sure as parents and grandparents, whatever, you know, that we keep our guns away," said White.

While some may suggest guns should only be made for adults, the weapon used in this case was especially made for children. Local officials add it's not abnormal for kids to fire guns.

"It's a normal way of life. I mean folks, and it's not just rural Kentucky, it's rural America. I mean folks hunting and fishing, it's sports-shooting. It's just a way of life. You know, you begin at an early age, learning to use and respect a gun," said Cumberland County judge executive Joe Phelps.

The girl suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest area, and was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released because of her age.
