Pilot's body found amid wreckage in Hudson River

Posted: Updated:

New York State Police divers on Friday afternoon found the body of the pilot a small, twin-engine plane that crashed in the Hudson River south of Albany Thursday, authorities said.

The pilot was identified as Michael B. Braunstien, 72, of Copake, N.Y., the pilot and owner of the plane that crashed, police said.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said the plane went down in the river in between Greene and Columbia counties, south of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Using sonar, troopers found a debris field in about 20-foot water on Friday. Divers recovered some wreckage, including a piece of the tail, and found Braunstien's body in the debris field.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, police said.

The Department of Environmental Conservation said any spilled fuel has most likely dissipated.

The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating.

Authorities are asking anyone who found wreckage or debris or who witnessed the crash to call State Police in Catskill at (518) 622-8600.

A state agency is suggesting summer shutdowns at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in the New York suburbs. The idea is to protect migrating and spawning fish who might otherwise get sucked into the plant. Indian Point takes 2.5 billion gallons a day from the Hudson River to make steam and cool its two reactors.
