Battling belly bloat? Beat the bulge by avoiding these foods

The countdown to summer has already started and women want to be bikini ready but there's one problem: belly bloat.

Rush University Medical Center Registered Dietitian Jean Alves describes belly bloat as intestinal gas prompted by what you eat and some foods are gas guilty.

To tame your tummy, start with breakfast.

"Cereal and dairy are not major culprits in and of themselves but there are major some potential problems with those," says Alves." One, more and more people are finding that they're lactose intolerant, that would be the number one cause of any kind of bloating associated with dairy."

Next are vegetables.

Nutritionist Franci Cohen says gas-free veggies include carrots, zucchini, eggplant, and tomatoes--cooked or raw.

Avoid broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce, which all contain water which can cause bloating.

There's a trick to targeting your tummy: variety plus protein.

"Salad alone, even with all these things, still might give you a little bit of gas," says Cohen. "Once you add in the protein, it's not a factor anymore."

Back off the bubbly. Champagne and carbonated drinks are big belly bloaters.

Eating right, but still feeling bloated?

Jorge Perez at Hyde Park's Bonne Sante Health Foods has several options.

"Having a good routine with exercise and diet," recommends Perez. "A good digestive enzyme with a probiotic as well. Digestive enzymes help to break down those foods.

And factor this - Jean Alves says the best time to start is now.

"You can see results in terms of increased bloating and feeling puffy as well as feeling relieved and having that nice flat belly that you're looking for within a couple of hours," she explains.

Bloating can cause your waist line to expand several inches. Surprisingly, chewing gum can also cause bloating and gas by reportedly increasing the risk of inhaling extra air into your digestive system.
