195 Firefighters Called To Walnut Grass Fire

WALNUT (CNS) - A grass fire erupted this afternoon in Walnut, blackening about five acres and threatening some homes before being brought under control.

Flames in the brush above the 600 block of North Silver Valley Trail were reported at 3:49 p.m., said David Bloom of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

"We dispatched 195 firefighters and one water-dropping helicopter to the scene," Bloom said. "Some homes were threatened (for a time)."

No injuries and no evacuations were reported.

"A knockdown was declared at 4:58 p.m., said county fire Dispatch Supervisor Quvando Johnson, who said personnel would remain on site for about two hours to guard against flare-ups.
