Avoid these ingredients to help prevent heart disease

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Making healthy choices at the grocery store can be difficult. With deceiving labels, and buzz words like 'organic,' 'all-natural' and 'heart-healthy,' it's tough to decide what to buy.

Dr. Joel Kahn, Clinical Professor of Cardiology at Wayne St.'s School of Medicine, says you can simplify your trip to the store by avoiding food with the following ingredients:

High Fructose Corn Syrup
Kahn says all sweeteners are a concern now with heart disease, obesity and dementia and high fructose corn syrup is No. 1 on the list. Kahn says instead of the sweetened beverages, try to drink unsweetened green tea and water.

Partially hydrogenated oils
Kahn says these oils raise your cholesterol and lower your good cholesterol and can lead to heart disease.

TMAO

Finally, in the last few weeks, data from the Cleveland Clinic has made headlines around the world. It began with a report that red meat contains carnitine, which can be converted to a chemical in the blood called TMAO. Earlier research has shown that TMAO may lay down new plaque in arteries, leading to heart attack, stroke, and death. However, in order to convert carnitine from red meat into TMAO, it requires bacteria in the gut. Only omnivores created TMAO, the vegans studied did not, because they had different kinds of bacteria living in their bowels.

It's not just the styles that have changed with weddings over the years -- it's also the technology. Disposable cameras used to be the norm, but now there's an even simpler way for the bride and groom to get some candid photos of their special day.
