The country is reeling with a slew of emotions: heart-break and excitement as the news of three women, Amanda Berry, 26, Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michele Knight, 32, found alive after decades of being in captivity dominates headlines. Can you imagine not seeing a loved one for decades and then finding out they are in fact alive? Your child?!
What went wrong? Three girls with loving families and involved communities, and yet with all of the craziness of life, social media, and to do lists- no-one saw anything?! For a whole decade?!
A decade later Charles Ramsey's curiosity lead to the end of this drama, freeing three innocent girls. What Ramsey did was pay attention and take action!
Did it really take ten years for someone to see to what is going at Castro's house? Could the nightmare for those girls have ended sooner? Of course it isn't the neighbors' fault that these men did horrible things, but could more have been done? Is our society so busy and self focused that we do not pay attention to what is going on next door?
There have been too many stories over the years about neighbors harboring horrifying secrets. Or in the case of Jaycee Dugard, a parole officer walking right through the house and not even noticing something was amiss. This is happening too frequently for us to not make some changes! It is not too late there could be more out there.
Twitter, Facebook, tumbler, Instagram and the like are the new decade phenomenon for connecting people. Is it really the case? We are more concerned with what our friends ate last night for dinner than our neighbor's health or new baby.
We are a society supposedly constantly connected with a plethora of social media tools, and yet find ourselves growing further and further apart.
Studies show that teenagers rather use social media tools: texting, cell phones, landlines, social network messaging, e-mailing, and instant messaging than communicate face to face. In my opinion, Ohio case is one of the major consequences our society brutally suffers.
So today, break away; unplug; listen. Teach your child the most incredible skill they cannot learn in school, but only by following you-connecting with you, PAUSE.
To the three women and their families- we are sorry for what was stolen from you, and we wish you healing and blessings as you begin the journey of living your lives again. You are here to teach our generation a priceless gift.
