Ga. man sentenced to 7 years in tax fraud scheme

ATLANTA (AP) - A former pilot has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a tax fraud scheme.

U.S. Attorney's officials say Charlie Shivers III was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison for filing more than 100 fraudulent corporate tax claims totaling about $35 million. Officials say the IRS paid the man about $5.6 million.

Authorities say 40-year-old Shivers filed fraudulent taxes claiming refunds in fuel taxes he fraudulently claimed were paid on fuel that was purchased for off-road company vehicles.

Shivers is ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay more than $5.6 million in restitution to the United States Treasury.
