He was the funniest guy in the room, something that made it all the harder for friends and fans to accept that beneath that reservoir of frenetic energy and seemingly endless good humor resided demons so dark they could push Robin Williams to suicide.

ATLANTA -

The man who made up half of the groundbreaking 1990's rap duo Kris Kross was laid to rest in Atlanta on Thursday afternoon.

Hundreds of mourners, many from the hip hop community, said goodbye to the rapper Chris Kelly. So, So Def Family founder Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat, Xscape and Kelly's sidekick in Kris Kross, Chris Smith, were among those that attended the funeral.

"I could say Kris Kross forever. But I know without Chris, my life -- it ain't going to ever be the same," said Smith.

Fulton County police found the 34-year-old in his home non-responsive last Wednesday. A police report indicated he had taken a mixture of heroin and cocaine the night before.

Kelly's uncle says his tragic death came too soon.

"Even though he was my nephew, we still had a father-son relationship. We could talk about anything. He was open-minded with me, and I was open-minded with him. We trust each other, we loved each other," said Kelly's uncle, LaMar Williams.

Kelly made it big as the "Mac Daddy" in the group Kris Kross. He and Chris Smith were the duo known for wearing their clothes backwards. They rose to stardom with the huge hit Jump.

Smith said he hopes the world will remember their contributions to music.

"I just hope our legacy for hip hop is never forgotten. But I'm going to do my part, though, to make sure Chris' memory lives on," Smith said.

Family members tell FOX 5 Kelly had an intense passion for music, but found it difficult to cope once fame left.

"We go through different transitions in life. As you know, a lot of childhood stars find it difficult to make that transition into adulthood and adulthood in the industry. So, Chris was very upbeat. He never gave up on his dreams. He always wanted to be a producer," said Kelly's cousin, LaToya Wise.

Kelly's funeral was held Jackson Memorial Baptist Church in Atlanta.
