CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A south suburban man has been charged with animal cruelty after eight dogs -- one of them dead -- were allegedly found inside his home during an eviction.

William Roberson, 37, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals, eight counts of misdemeanor violation of owner's duties and one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, according to a release from the Cook County Sheriff's office.

When a Sheriff's police eviction team showed up at Roberson's house in the 50 block of West 151st Street in Harvey, they found the animals living in squalor. One dog was dead, apparently having bled to death overnight after barbaric castration surgery. Another starving and wounded animal could still lose one of its legs.

Gaunt and malnourished, the dogs--which are an estimated to be pit bull mixes around 9 to 12 months old--had probably not yet been in the ring, investigators said.  But the discovery of a terrified, starving Chihuahua kept in a cage led them to believe a brutal dog fight likely was the plan.

"It was shocking, the conditions of the basement," Carrie Snow with the South Suburban Humane Society says. "We didn't see the real skinny dog right away. What you saw first was the deceased dog laying there."

Roberson is scheduled to appear at the Markham Courthouse Friday for a bond hearing.

The South Suburban Humane Society took custody of the dogs and took them for veterinary treatment, police said. Once the animals are given a clean bill of health, they will be available for adoption.

The body of the dead dog was also turned over to the Humane Society.
